History and Development

Golf in Sri Lanka has a rich history and offers a unique experience due to the island’s diverse landscapes and well-maintained courses.

Golf was introduced to Sri Lanka by the British during the colonial period. The first golf course, the Royal Colombo Golf Club, was established in 1879, making it one of the oldest golf clubs outside the United Kingdom. Since then, golf has grown in popularity among locals and tourists alike.

Major Golf Courses

Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC)

  • Location: Colombo
  • History: Established in 1879, it’s the oldest golf club in Sri Lanka.
  • Features: An 18-hole, par 71 course with lush fairways and challenging water hazards. The club is known for its colonial-style clubhouse and rich heritage.

Victoria Golf and Country Resort

  • Location: Kandy
  • History: Opened in 1997 and designed by Donald Steel.
  • Features: This 18-hole, par 73 championship course is set against the backdrop of the Victoria Reservoir and the Knuckles Mountain Range, offering stunning scenery and a challenging layout.

Nuwara Eliya Golf Club (NEGC)

  • Location: Nuwara Eliya
  • History: Founded in 1889, it’s the second-oldest golf club in Sri Lanka.
  • Features: An 18-hole, par 70 course situated at an altitude of 6,000 feet. The course offers cool, crisp air and a scenic view of the surrounding tea plantations and mountains.

Eagles’ Golf Links

  • Location: Trincomalee
  • History: Managed by the Sri Lanka Air Force, this course is relatively newer.
  • Features: A 18-hole, par 72 course with views of the Indian Ocean and well-maintained fairways and greens.

Set amidst the tea plantations of the central highlands, Nuwara Eliya Golf Club is a charming course with spectacular views which was built by a Scottish soldier in 1889.

Colombo

The Royal Colombo Golf Club dates back to 1879 and offers a peaceful oasis just a short distance from the centre of Sri Lanka’s busy capital.

There are golf courses that are scenic, but the Victoria Golf and Country Resort is simply spectacular. Even non-golfers will love it here, as a range of other activities are on offer.
